“The Kid”

The Splendid Splinter.

The greatest hitter,

that ever lived.

Coiling torso,

even more so,

just before a hit.

Hitting hands.

Press reprimands.

Day/night double-header.

Marine pilot.

Pitcher’s silence.

Prolific baseball shredder.

Cast fishing line.

Dear, Number 9.

Baseball’s sweetest swing.

Chasing perfection.

Bat ball connection.

Twice triple crowned a king.

When all was done,

crushed 521.

One year, hit .406.

The baseball gods,

defied the odds,

when they gifted us The Kid.

A very special thanks to Carol Sheehan for suggesting: Baseball-Boys of Summer

40/40: Summer Poem Slam-a-bam is a ongoing project in which people have joined me for 40 days and 40 nights of on-demand poetry. They have submitted the concepts, ideas, and subjects; I’ve done the rest.
